The Department of Economics was established and began operations in 1998, coinciding with the founding of the college. Its inception was a direct response to the needs of the financial and banking sectors, as well as other ministries. The department admits students who are graduates of preparatory studies from the literary, scientific, and commercial branches, as well as relevant specialized institutes within the Technical Education Authority. Graduates are awarded a Bachelor's degree in Economic Sciences, in addition to offering Master's and Ph.D. postgraduate programs.
Economics is considered a highly significant specialization in Arab and international universities. This field is concerned with all aspects of economic sciences at the governmental level and within state agencies, both locally and centrally. The core focus of this specialization is to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of institutions involved in economic affairs. This includes entities aimed at achieving public good, such as ministries, general directorates and their branches, or government enterprises (public service and production companies) that are either self-funded or profit-oriented. The latter represents a new trend gaining increasing international, regional, academic, and practical attention. The department's graduates serve as crucial inputs for organizations, departments, and companies both inside and outside the country, fulfilling the mission of the university and college by providing students with scientific expertise in the field of economics.
